His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday morning joined the Golden Jubilee Cycling Recreation. The Cycling recreation in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee celebration of His Majesty's Accession to the Throne received encouraging participation from citizens and residents in the country. The recreation event which started and end at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien enlivened more the cheerful atmosphere of the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. The activity that combined the aspect of healthy lifestyle, recreation and tourism promotion was intended to develop the sporting culture in the country and to strengthen solidarity through community involvement in-line with the healthy citizens' aspiration.
Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports; Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Doctor Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs; Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education; Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Ibrahim, the Minister at Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister of Finance; Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Bahrin bin Abdullah, the Minister of Development; Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Apong, the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism; Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat, the Minister of Communications; And Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, the Minister of Health.
Immediately after arrival, His Majesty signed the declaration sign of 'Sukan Berbasikal Adalah Hobi Negara' or cycling is the national sport. Followed by the release of 50 balloons in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee celebration of His Majesty's Accession to the Throne.
Also in attendance and taking part in the recreation event were: His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Wakeel; His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah; And Her Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah.
The 11.5 kilometre cycling recreation was also participated by the Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Deputy Permanent Secretaries, invited guests and the public, including foreigners. The event circled Bandar Seri Begawan, passing through main roads among them - Jalan Pretty, Jalan Elizabeth Dua, Jalan Masjid Omar 'Ali Saifuddien, Jalan Kianggeh, Jalan Sekolah, Jalan Kumbang Pasang, Jalan Lapangan Terbang Lama, Jalan Muhibbah, Jalan Menteri Besar, Jalan Perdana Menteri and Jalan Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha, and ending at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar 'Ali Saifuddien.
The cycling participants also passed through several primary and secondary educational institutes in the capital, including Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien College and Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School, which are among the oldest secondary schools in the country.
The participants also en route the Jalan Perdana Menteri. The event began from Jalan Gadong and ended at the roundabout of Berakas/ Muara. Several important and historic buildings such as the Prime Minister's Office, 'Istana Tetamu' and Bolkiah Garrison as well as business premises and shopping complex are located along the route.
The Golden Jubilee Cycling Recreation was held in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee celebration of His Majesty's Accession to the Throne. The recreation event among other things aimed to develop the sporting culture in the country and to strengthen solidarity through community involvement in-line with the healthy citizens' aspiration.
The Cycling Recreation jointly organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Communication and Ministry of Health and other ministries as well as the Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation shows that sports is recognised, honoured and an encouragement on par with other social sector in order to achieve the national development objective, as well as continuous solidarity and stability.
His Majesty as well as other members of the royal family then watched the parade of 50 cyclists from the four districts who completed 50 kilometres of cycling. The Monarch also received a Pasambah presented by several association that took part in the Bandarku Ceria.
His Majesty also mingled with the participants and the public, and also received their junjung ziarah. The closeness of the beloved Monarch in spending time with his subjects by participating in the recreational activity had further enliven the warm atmosphere of goodwill and harmony. His Majesty's openness spurred the people's continued loyalty in upholding and preserving the sovereignty of the monarch. The solid affection between the king and the citizens acts as the backbone in maintaining peace, stability and harmony of the nation and at the same time symbolises a strong unity and close cooperation.
